A Note on Reading

The words are not always waiting there.

Some mornings my mind feels like an empty white room, the kind they sometimes use in movies to interrogate suspects.  There is no furniture, there are no patterns to break the monotony.  Everything is blank, silent, sleeping.

Sometimes I need another person’s words to wake my own.  Good readers make good thinkers.  Good literature provokes thought, provides insight, challenges assumptions, and encourages me to share another’s perspective.  And when I begin to see things from another’s point of view, I understand better what makes my point of view unique to me, and that in turn helps me to express myself more honestly.

All of that to say: If you are not an avid reader, do not expect to be an avid writer.
